Secondary Structural Framing
In addition to the main frames, a Kodiak Steel Homes® frame system also contains secondary structural framing and exterior wall framing. Secondary framing includes members like roof purlins, ceiling joists, and eave struts, which help support localized dead loads or live loads (for example, the weight of the roofing materials or a person working on the roof) and serve to transfer loads to the main frames and to stabilize the structure. Our secondary framing is mostly comprised of "cold-formed" members which are made by stamping or pressing steel at room temperature into a desired shape (often a "C" or "Z" shape) and then cutting it to length and punching it with the correct bolt-hole pattern. Both cold-formed and hot-rolled members are referred to as "red iron" because of their red-oxide primer finish.

Exterior Wall Studs
Kodiak Steel Homes models are designed with six-inch 18-gauge galvanized studs for exterior wall framing (a few models have eight-inch studs on some walls). The generous six-inch depth will allow you to install enough insulation for an R-19 (without taking additional insulating materials, like our reflective foil, into account). Unlike the shear-wall framing of a stick-built home, Kodiak Steel Homes wall framing is only used to support and connect the wall covering itself and has no load-bearing responsibility. In a stick-built wall, the loads are spread across all the members, so the failure of the weakest one threatens the whole structure. A Kodiak Steel Homes framing system relies on its strongest members for structural integrity, so our home can't fail until they do.
